St. Louis Woman Wins $25,000 A Year for Life On A Whim

Brenda Richmond buys her Missouri Lottery Draw Games tickets when she goes grocery shopping. Until Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, the St. Louis woman had never played Lucky for Life before. For her, all it took was one ticket for one drawing to win $25,000 a year for life, the game’s second-level prize.

While buying tickets from a Lottery vending machine at Schnucks Market, 8037 W. Florissant Ave. in Jennings, Richmond decided to give Lucky for Life a try.

“I had money left over in the machine,” she explained. “I just hit Lucky for Life to use it up.”

Richmond put the ticket in her purse and continued with her shopping. For almost two weeks, she unknowingly held the ninth Lucky for Life ticket worth $25,000 a year for life sold in Missouri since 2015.

She returned to the same Schnucks Market to check her tickets while fetching groceries on Feb. 26. After the clerk explained to Richmond that she had matched all of the Feb. 14 drawing’s white-ball numbers — missing only the Lucky Ball — and how much she had won on the ticket, Richmond said she was nearly overcome with excitement.

“I couldn’t even shop,” she said. “I was so nervous, I couldn’t shop.”

The winning numbers for the Feb. 14 Lucky for Life drawing were 24, 26, 32, 38, 42, and the Lucky Ball was 18.

Lucky for Life is a $2 per play multi-state Draw Game that features a top prize of $1,000 a day for life and a second prize of $25,000 a year for life. Richmond joins eight other Missouri players who have won the second-level prize of $25,000 a year for life since sales for the Draw Game began in 2015 — an average of two per year.

In the most recent fiscal year, players in St. Louis City won more than $40 million in Missouri Lottery prizes. Retailers received more than $4.1 million in commissions and bonuses, and an additional $10.6 million went to education programs in the city.
