Raymore Man Almost Doesn't Buy $100,000 Winning Ticket

Rodney Downey likes to buy new Missouri Lottery Scratchers tickets whenever they come out. While the practice ultimately led the Raymore man to a $100,000 prize on a “Money Tree” Scratchers game, he almost missed out on discovering the winning ticket.

Downey had stopped at Price Chopper, 900 W. Foxwood Drive in Raymore, on his way to work on the morning of Oct. 1. After buying one ticket, which didn’t turn out to be a winner, he was about to leave and head to the office.

“But, I don’t know, something told me I needed to buy a second one,” he shared.

It was that second ticket that changed the course of his day.

Downey said he usually scratches off just enough of his Scratchers ticket to be able to check it on a Check-A-Ticket machine, but this ticket presented a different situation.

“When it said ‘Winner. Notify Lottery’ – or something like that – I said, ‘I’ve never seen this before!’”

He then scratched the remainder of the ticket there in the store.

“My hands got a little shaky once I realized what was going on,” he added. “I looked for the closest pen I could find and signed it right away.”

After sharing the unexpected news with his wife, Downey spent his lunch hour claiming his prize at the Lottery’s office in Independence. He said he had a list of things he could do with the prize money – from paying bills to painting his house – but he also shared that it might be just the right time to get his wife her first-ever brand-new car.

“Money Tree” is a $20 ticket that went on sale Sept. 24. It features two top prizes of $500,000, as well as two additional prizes of $100,000. The ticket is a preview of the Lottery’s holiday-themed Scratchers collection set to debut on Oct. 15.

All current holiday-themed Scratchers tickets will be eligible for the “Gourmet Getaway” giveaway, a second-chance promotion that offers players a chance to satisfy their cravings for food-filled journeys throughout the world with once-in-a-lifetime culinary trips.
