St. Joseph Man Scratches Off $100,000 Prize

“Today was the day!” according to a Missouri Lottery player, who uncovered a $100,000 top prize on a “$500 in a Flash” Scratchers ticket. Christopher Kirby regularly enjoys playing the themed tickets, but he was taken aback to have his purchase change the course of his day, not to mention his future.

“Oh, my goodness!” he exclaimed, while claiming his prize at the Lottery’s Kansas City office.

Earlier that morning, the machine operator had bought the winning ticket at Speedy Convenience, 1310 S. Riverside Road, in St. Joseph. He then took the ticket to work, where he systematically began scratching it off while talking with a coworker.

“On the top row, there was a 10 that matched, and it was $20,000,” he shared. “And on the second row, there was another matching number, which was another 20 grand. I told her that, and she was like, “Bull!’ and I said, ‘Look!’”

He continued scratching and soon discovered there were even more winnings to be had.

“I was on my way to tell another coworker, and before I got to him, there was $60,000 more!” he said. “It was an amazing feeling. It’s just surreal right now.”

Kirby’s goal is to be thoughtful with his plans for the prize money.

“We have four children, so it’s a lot. We’re going to sit and just think for a couple months until we can agree what to do with it, so there’s no regret in the long run,” he stated.

“$500 in a Flash” is a $5 ticket that went on sale last December. To date, more than $11.2 million in unclaimed prizes remain available in the game, including three more top prizes of $100,000.

In the most recent fiscal year, players in Buchanan County won more than $11.8 million in Missouri Lottery prizes. Retailers received more than $1.2 million in commissions and bonuses, and an additional $4.3 million went to education programs in the county.
